Celebrating pride through logos

So pride month is June, which means that every major company or organization with a social media account is switching its logo and profile picture to incorporate the pride flag. Just like the BLM movement, and then supporting Ukraine during the war, there's a frighteningly large amount of people who this phenomenon really pisses off.

It’s an interesting question — where do we draw the line when it comes to supporting a cause, using it as a marketing strategy, or even being politically correct? Nothing these days is simple, so the line is so burred it’s almost non-existent. Then the worst of it - do companies switch out the logo design on July 1st? What will the backlash look like? For example, in May 2020, TikTok star Charli D’Amelio changed her profile picture on TikTok to a “Black Lives Matter” poster. Believe it or not, she had it up for over a year, to the point in which people started questioning why she wasn’t taking it down, leading people to conclude that, with her following, she really can’t. Changing the profile is the easy part, it’s taking it off that makes even more of a political statement.

This has become such a centralized topic that it seems that we are forgetting what we are celebrating. If you ask me, I have no idea what we are celebrating. The LGBTQ community is more than incorporated into our lives. (Yesterday my coworker told me that he feels like all the girls today are gay, which is such a loaded statement I had no response). So how do I celebrate pride? Well for starters, I don’t change my profile picture. I don’t even have my pronouns in my bio. However, I think today, NOT making a fuss about the month, or having the mentality of “what are we gonna do about these gays?” feels like a good amount of support to me. Most things today are extreme, so being middle-ground feels right.

Anyways, happy pride.
